You must be between 18 and 59, a South African citizen or legal resident, and unable to work due to a disability to be eligible for the grant. You cannot additionally receive social security benefits from SASSA or any other government organization. When you apply for the grant, you must present evidence of your disability, such as a medical report.

A significant source of support for many people with disabilities is the SASSA disability grant, which pays R1,600 per month. You must fill out an application form and deliver it to your local SASSA office along with supporting documentation from a medical expert to be considered for the grant. The application process is simple.

If your application is accepted, you will receive a monthly payment to assist with the costs associated with your disability. Receiving a SASSA disability grant takes two months, but the exact time frame will depend on your unique situation. The money caN pay for housing, transportation, education, or training costs if you are granted the grant. It can also pay for medical expenses.

How Much Does SASSA Pay for Disability Grant?

To assist people with disabilities who cannot support themselves financially, the SASSA Disability Grant is a critically important financial aid program. The grant is meant to help with the expenses related to living with a disability, such as medical costs, assistive technology, and other related costs. The good news is that in October 2025, the maximum SASSA Disability Grant will increase to R2 090 per person monthly. Currently, it is R2 080. Remember that the amount you receive might not be the full amount because it’s based on a sliding scale and your household income and the means test, among other things.

Furthermore, as was mentioned above, there are strict requirements you must meet to be eligible for the SASSA Disability Grant. You need to be a resident of South Africa and either a refugee, a citizen, or a permanent resident. Additionally, you must have a physical or mental impairment that prevents you from working or making a living wage, be between 18 and 59, and meet the other eligibility requirements. Furthermore, you cannot already be the beneficiary of a private grant for your disability, and you must be able to demonstrate the disability with sufficient medical support to receive SASSA approval.

To receive the grant, even if you meet the requirements, you must pass the SASSA means test. This case means having a maximum household income of R92 520 annually, or R6 800 per month, for a single person and a maximum household income of R185 040 annually, or R15 420 per month, when there are two caregivers for the disabled person. Considering this, the government will periodically raise the means test to reflect inflation.

Every month, usually in the middle of the first week, SASSA divides its grant recipients into 3 days. You can anticipate receiving your SASSA disability payment on the second day of the cycle, which falls between the first and tenth of the month.
