How to Apply for SRD 350 Grant
To apply for the SRD Grant, you must possess a mobile device, computer, or laptop with internet connectivity. And the SRD Grant application process is comprised of six steps, as detailed below:
- FIRST STEP: SELECT AN APPLICATION METHOD
You can submit your SRD Grant application through WhatsApp, the SRD website, or the SASSA Chatbot. Only use one of these methods for your application; submitting multiple applications will not hasten the process and could delay it.

To Apply through WhatsApp:
- Forward a message via WhatsApp to this number; 082 046 8553
- Supply personal particulars
- You will get a Reference number, your unique OTP, and a specific link to click.
- Click the given link, type in your OTP, and authenticate your account
- Input your last name and the identification number
- Affirm personal particulars provided via the WhatsApp conversation.
To Apply through the SRD Website:
- Launch your internet browser and visit the SRD site
- Key in your mobile number details and identification number, and hit “send SMS.”
- You will get an OTP featuring six digits via SMS
- Input the OTP on the SRD site and select “verify pin.”
To Apply through the SASSA Chatbot:
- Open your internet browser and go to the SASSA site
- Select the Grant assistance chatbox (SRD R350 – an orange-like box located at the edge of the screen)
- Enter your identification number details and mobile number
- In the chatbox, pick the alternative to apply for the grant (SRD R350)
- Click on the SRD site link shared by the chatbot
- Abide by the SRD website guidelines.
- SECOND STEP: ACCEPT THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS
- Read and approve the terms stated in the “Declaration and the Consent.”
- Read and confirm the T’s featured in the “You and Your Special COVID-19 SRD Grant document.”
- THIRD STEP: SUBMIT PERSONAL PARTICULARS
Supply personal particulars, which include:
- Identification Number Information
- Full Name and Surname (must match with the ones on the ID Doc)
- Your Gender (male or female)
- Your Specific Physical Address
- Your Specific Contact Details (the email address and mobile number you use daily)
- They may also ask for additional particulars.
- FOURTH STEP: SELECT YOUR PAYMENT METHOD / SUBMIT YOUR BANK DETAILS
Fresh candidates with a personal bank account must submit the following particulars for payment:
- Bank Name
- Bank Account Number
- Bank Branch Name
- Bank Account Type
- Accept the Terms and Conditions
- Share the Bank Details
Newcomers who don’t have a personal bank account must present the following particulars for payment:
- Choose Payment Method – Cash Send
- Accept T’s and C’s
- Share the Bank Details
Current candidates with a personal bank account should authenticate the following particulars for payment:
- Authenticate The Existing Personal Banking Details
- Accept T’s and C’s
- Tick on Submit
Current candidates who initially selected the cash option, but would now like to switch to the bank payment method, must give the following particulars for payment:
- The Bank Name
- The Bank Account Number
- The Bank Branch Name

- FIFTH STEP: GET AN SMS
Candidates will obtain an SMS informing them of their bank particulars. Once this SMS is received, the application (SRD R350) is now active.
- Sixth STEP: SASSA VERIFICATION /APPROVAL
After you submit your SRD R350 Grant application, your ID number, name, and surname are checked against the Department of Home Affairs database.
The ID details are also checked against authorized databases like the UIF to verify your application. Fraud risk scoring is another step that receives aid from fraud prevention partners. During this process, your identification card and mobile number details get checked against authorized databases.
Your application will be approved or denied for a reason based on the verification and validation process. You’ll see the list of rejection reasons. After this verification and validation process, the SRD R350 Grant application is now complete.
Requirements for SRD Grant
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Special COVID-19 SRD Grant eligibility criteria require applicants to be citizens, refugees, asylum seekers, or special permit holders aged between 18 and 60. They must earn R624 or less monthly, be unemployed, and need more financial means. They cannot receive support from other sources/social grants or NSFAS stipends and cannot contribute towards or qualify for UIF payments. Moreover, applicants must not unreasonably refuse educational or employment opportunities to receive this grant.
Has SASSA extended SRD Grant?
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has extended the R350 grant until March 2024. The covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) will continue to provide updates, and applicants approved for the SRD grant will receive monthly payments during disbursement.
How to Check SASSA SRD Status
You can track the status of your R350 SRD grant application online, through WhatsApp method, or via the SASSA call centre. To check your status online, visit the SRD portal and submit your ID and phone number. Add 082 046 8553 as a contact on WhatsApp to confirm your grant status, and dial 0800 60 10 11 for the call centre.
How to Apply For Reconsideration Of SRD Grant
You can apply for Grant Reconsideration through online channels. Visit https://srd.sassa.gov.za and select the application for reconsideration. Enter your phone number and ID document details, and follow each instruction to finish the process.
How To Appeal SRD Grant
If your SRD grant application got rejected despite meeting all criteria, you could submit an appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). To appeal, visit the SRD Appeals Website and fill in your ID and mobile number. Select the month and reason for your appeal, then click “submit” to complete the process. Remember, you can only forward a new grant appeal for each declined application month.
