How Much is NSFAS Monthly Allowance?

NSFAS provides an allowance for its applicants. And the monthly allowance paid directly by NSFAS.

There are about five categories of allowance that NSFAS pays to its applicants. These include; Study Materials allowance, Accommodation allowance, Travel allowance, Incidental allowance, and living allowance. Some of these allowances are on-time payments that are expected to cover that academic period. In sum, the NSFAS pays an average of R 4,296 monthly as an allowance to every individual. The period varies and is always between 10 to 11 months. As part of the study material, NSFAS pays R 5,200 for the whole period. It is your duty to ensure it covers your books and other learning materials you may need.

Regarding the accommodation, their institution and campus you may find yourself can influence the amount and the time period for the monthly payment. The accommodation only applies to private accommodation, not students moving from home to campus. This is to cover your hostel fees. If you find yourself at the Stellenbosch campus, you are eligible to receive R 5970 every month for a period of 10 months. With Tygerberg campus, you are eligible to receive R 5427 for a period of 11 months. The campuses may differ, which can alter the payment structure but have little significance on the amount.

The living allowance is meant to cover your day-to-day activities. This fund is made as a way to support minor expenses, including food and other necessities. NSFAS Living allowance for 2026 monthly is R 1500. The monthly allowance may also change depending on the institution or campus you find yourself. However, the average amount for the living allowance is around R 1500 every month.

The incidental monthly allowance paid by NSFAS is R 290 and can be changed accordingly. The annual travel allowance varies as the distance is a great factor; the further your campus, the higher the amount. But NSFAS has an average amount set aside to pay all travel allowances, which is R 750.

How Much Allowance Does NSFAS Give Students Per the Year

If you have put in your application to receive funds from NSFAS or to be part of their beneficiaries, you need to know what to expect every year. The NSFAS serves all public institutions and has enrolled over 600,000 students on its platform. Currently, the NSFAS pays an average of R90, 590 to students.

When can I expect my NSFAS Money?

The wait and anxiety may rise when expecting money from NSFAS. As the reform and changes came in, the process of receiving money from NSFAS has been made easy. All academic years almost roll in a similar pattern, which eases pressure on funds release and disbursement. Each university, irrespective of its academic calendar, will have a default payment structure from NSFAS. TVET or colleges who have their students applying at NSFAS for allowance also receive their funds once the academic session has begun.

South Africa is a big country, and with so many universities and colleges, you may experience different areas as well as proximities from one region to the other. And in this case, the time span spent on the academic season may vary in a minimal way. The campus distance may be factored into the release of funds by NSFAS. You can always find out from your campus office the period NSFAS will be paying.

Usually, NSFAS pays in a 10 to 11 months period. And this starts from February to November and January to February respectively. Kindly note this may be according to the institution and campus you will find yourself in.

However, have it in mind the allowances are paid in the cycle and usually begin in February and end in November.

How Do I Get My NSFAS Allowances?

Since the inception of NSFAS in tertiary education in South Africa, application for funds from NSFAS has been made easy. Before you can get the NSFAS allowance, you need to put in your application. Once your application has been successful, you are automatically qualified to receive allowances directly from NSFAS. The amount of allowance to receive can be determined by NSFAS. If you wish to know your allowance details, you can always inquire from the right institution, which could be your school bursary or NSFAS.

Your allowance is sent to your NSFAS wallet, which allows you to withdraw cash or spend at any convenience store or merchant registered with NSFAS.

Once your NSFAS wallet account has been created, a welcome SMS alert is sent to your account. You would need a phone and sim card to get have this platform. Always ensure you have this phone close to you as those details on the phone will be used to receive funds from NSFAS.

As a way to track payment and make processes easy, NSFAS has designed a USSD system that allows you to get access to your allowance. After your application has been successful, dial *134*176# and enter your credentials which include your ID number, to verify & authenticate your account; once this is done, dial the same short code and follow the prompts to withdraw cash. You can make withdrawals from the ATM and participating shops like Boxer, Checkers, Shoprite, etc. Remember, there is a withdrawal limit of R1000, but to make payments and purchases, you have no limitation. You can always make payments to your landlords or the required institution using your NSFAS wallet without having any limit on your amount.

Is NSFAS increasing the allowance?

As the months and years pass by, our needs and expenses go up. In certain ways, inflation gets caught up with us. As a refined institution that seeks the welfare of university and college students, The NSFAS in March projected a 10% increase in allowances for 2026 payments.

How much is NSFAS money monthly?

Considering the location of the institution and campus, the NSFAS may vary accordingly. And this monthly money includes various categories like Travel, accommodation living, reading material, and incidental. NSFAS provides a monthly payment ranging from R682 to R5970, and this may depend on the type of allowance. The campus also influences the amount to be received from NSFAS. It is not a biased structure but a very fair one.
