Is Matric And Grade 12 The Same Thing?

It is common for learners and students to be in a dilemma about matric and grade 12. But as learners, we must learn to define terms and understand what they mean. 

The dilemma sets in when people want to understand their various examination criteria and their next position pertaining to the exams.

When we look at the matric exams as a whole, it is one of the key assessments that every South African will come across in high school. These assessments are purposely meant to test the abilities and general knowledge of the students. It is designed to prepare them for career jobs and also higher education. 

Is Matric And Grade 12 The Same Thing? 

What comes into your thoughts when matric and grade 12 are mentioned? Do you think they are the same, or are there some differences?

When we look at the educational system in South Africa, the last class in high school is considered grade 12. 

Also, these grade 12 students or learners are those who are registered for the matric examination.

Now, why do we consider these two to be the same? What is the common thing linking them? 

It can be quite confusing for many to think about matric and grade 12 not being the same. Looking at what both terms serve, it is obvious that matric and grade 12 are the same things.

The grade 12 defines the class in high school, while the matric is mostly referred to as the final lap of high school education. 

Typically, the exams that students take when they finish school, which are organized by the government, are referred to as “matric exams”. As a result, students in their last year of high school in grade 12 are called “matriculants”, more commonly known as “matrics”. After completing the matric year, students are considered to have “matriculated”.

If you come across matric and Grade 12, do not let these two words set you apart. They are only used based on their references, but both the matric and grade 12 are the same thing. 

How Many Subjects Are There In Matric?

If you find yourself in high school, the questions about subjects aspect come in when preparing for your matric exams. Many students in South Africa are familiar with 23 subjects being taught in high school. But the main issue that pops up is the number of subjects to be written in the matric exams. 

In the high school matric in South Africa, there are about 23 subjects available, which comprise compulsory and elective subjects. 

Students preparing to take their matric exams in Grade 12 should know that there are 7 subjects available to be written. In the grade 12 class in high school, there are 7 subjects that are required in matric. Students are obligated to take all these 7 subjects in their matric. Although there are about 23 subjects in high school, during your matric period, 7 subjects are considered to be written in the final matric exams.  

How Are Matric Final Marks Calculated?

There are two key components to consider when calculating the final marks of the matric exams. As we know, the matric exam is considered the last assessment that is used to evaluate the readiness and knowledge of students in grade 12.

To calculate the final marks of the matric exams, it is important to consider the continuous assessment, which is also referred to as the school-based assessment. This is part of the student curriculum in the grade 12 class. It basically looks at assignments, homework, practical work, class participation, attendance, and projects. These tasks are reviewed and scored by the tutors or teachers in the school. And as a key contributor to the matric final school, the school-based assessment makes up 25% of the final matric exams.

The other part that adds up to make the matric final exams 100% is the actual matric exams written at the end of the grade 12 class. At the end of the academic year, these students are required to sit for the national senior certificate examination, which is considered to be a nationwide exam. This is, however regulated and administered by the Department of Education in South Africa. This matric exam contributes 75% of the total matric score.

After the matric examinations have been completed, both the SBA and the final matric exams are captured and submitted to the Department of Education. These two assessments are graded accordingly, with the school-based assessment being 25% and the final matric exams being 75%.

What is 12th grade in South Africa?

Graduating from Grade 12 is extremely important as it has a significant impact on shaping individuals’ futures and making a positive contribution to the country’s progress. In South Africa, they call the last year of high school Grade 12.

 This is a very important time for students as they reach the end of their 12-year education and prepare for their matriculation exams, which are called the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams. The 12th grade in South Africa is considered to be the last phase of high school enrollment.

 The education system in South Africa aims to ensure that every student has an equal chance at success. 

What level is Matric?

Matriculation is a term used to describe the educational level that is usually attained upon completion of secondary school or high school. In many educational systems worldwide, it is considered to be the same as Grade 12.

Can I write Matric without Grade 12?

It is possible to write a matric without Grade 12. Grade 12 does not define the exams but only defines your stage or level in high school. There are many people who may have not had the chance to be in grade 12 but looking forward to writing matric. In this case, there are available opportunities in many colleges that allow individuals to write matric without having to be in the grade 12 class in high school.

What qualification type is matric?

 Many individuals who do not have the chance to take the matric exams may want to find a qualification that may hold much importance as the matric. Knowing the strength and authority of qualifications can help you decide your career or high education choice.

A certificate at an NQF level 04 is considered to be equivalent to a Matric Certificate. So, just to clarify, a Senior Certificate is classified as being on an NQF level 04.

What is the difference between matric and A levels in South Africa?

 In education, there are different stages and levels at every point in time. And each stage comes with its own requirements as well as prestige. 

Although qualification may not necessarily contribute to your success in life, it places an emphasis on your academic work and also your eligibility to study other courses and qualifications. 

Regarding educational qualifications, A-Levels can be considered similar to Matric if the subjects taken are recognized as Matric subjects. In general, A-Levels are considered to be slightly more advanced compared to the South African Matric. A-Levels are widely regarded as a higher level of education. 

The South African Matric is the official term for the national senior certificate that students receive when they finish their high school education in South Africa. There are several factors that contribute to the perception that A-Levels are more challenging.
