If you prepare enough for your matric exams but still fail, you might feel unhappy and perhaps robbed. To dispel this feeling, you can apply to have the exam papers with unsatisfactory results remarked. The facility is available to all disgruntled matriculants, although candidates should use it sparingly. This article explains what you should know before sending your matric papers for remarking.

What Is a Matric Exam Remark?

A matric exam remark refers to the process of marking the exam for the second time upon request by the disgruntled candidate. If you feel the final result does not reflect your performance in a specific exam, you can apply for a remark. A different marker is assigned the task of remarking on your paper for the second time to ensure that everything meets the standard expectations of the examining board. The new marker checks if all questions have been marked correctly.

How to Send Matric Papers for Remarking

You can apply for a remark on your exam paper online at https://www.eservices.gov.za after the release of November results. When final matric results are released, students are given a few days to check them and lodge complaints with the appropriate examining authority if they have any.

The deadline for an exam remark application is usually short. For instance, the closing date for exam remarking applications, rechecking, and viewing of exam scripts was on 3 February 2026. This means that exam remarking is a preserve for students with genuine issues that should be addressed before the onset of supplementary exams, which are often written in May and June.

All applications for exam remarks are done online, and no physical copies are entertained. Candidates cannot apply for remarking on common assessment tasks such as Life Orientation. An exam remark comes with a charge of R112 per subject, which is more expensive than marking the final exam script submitted in November.

When you get your results after a remark, you can also apply to view the exam script. The Department of Basic Education usually notifies the applicants about their results for remarking by letter. Whenever there are some changes made, the candidates will get amended statements of results.

How Much Does a Matric Re-Mark Cost?

A matric remark costs R112 per subject. If you want the paper to be rechecked, then you should fork out R27 per subject. Additionally, after remarking and rechecking, the student will be expected to pay R212 for viewing their exam scripts. The entire process will cost you about R347, so you must have a genuine reason for your remarks.

However, applicants from no-fee schools do not pay any fees for remarking or rechecking their final matric exam scripts. Knowing the benefits of an exam remark is vital to make an informed decision.

Does Remarking Your Matric Change the Results?

Remarking your matric is meant to promote fairness among the candidates so they do not feel short-changed by the education system in South Africa. However, applying for a remark does not always guarantee that your results will change.

When your exam paper is remarked, it is possible to get negative changes, no changes, or your marks will improve. However, these scenarios depend on several factors. If you want to apply for a remark on your exam sheet for the sake of just doing it, it is recommended that you should not waste your time and money.

The thought of a remark can give you more stress, so some things are better left as they are. If you request your script to be marked for the second time, this can be interpreted as if you lack trust in the matric exam system. Therefore, the second marker might not be as lenient as the first one. This can lead to negative changes or no change at all to your results. In either situation, you will not benefit anything significant from the entire remarking process, which can only prove to be costly when you have already decided.

However, a remark on your matric exam script can come with some changes. If a few marks are added to your overall grade, they can help you get admission to a higher-learning institute. Depending on your situation, this will go a long way in saving you the hassle of preparing for a rewrite or matric upgrade.

Markers are also infallible human beings, so they can also make mistakes. They might miss something on your paper. However, a remark will help rectify the issue so that you get the marks you deserve. This will help you improve your chances of enrolling for the dream course you need if you have the right marks.

A remark can increase your AFPs, determining whether you attain a matric bachelor or diploma pass. With a bachelor’s pass, you are guaranteed to enroll at any university of your choice in South Africa. If you fail to have the error corrected through a remark, you might end up getting a lower pass which will affect your future career.

When Is the Matric Re-Mark Deadline?

The matric remark deadline usually comes after about one week following the release of exams. The closing date for remark, rechecking, and viewing of matric scripts applications was 3 February 2026. It is a good idea to apply for a remark early if you are not happy with the final result you got.

The Department of Basic Education always announces the opening and closing dates for remark applications. There is no deadline extension, so once you miss it, you must find other means of improving your matric grades. For example, you can consider a matric rewrite or matric upgrade if you are above 21 years.

If you are unhappy with your matric results, you can apply for a remark. This refers to the marking of your script for the second time to ensure that you get the marks you deserve. However, a remark might not change your result, or it might improve your overall grade.
