Depending on your program of study, you must pass a certain number of credits to proceed to the next level. How Many Credits Do You Need to Pass Unisa?

Each module offered at Unisa is equivalent to 12 credits. Students in their first academic year should pass at least 36 credits or three modules with 12 credits each to be able to register for their second year. If they have another alternate pathway, they should attain at least 24 credits, which are equivalent to two modules with 12 credits each. 

Students in their second and subsequent years at Unisa should pass at least 48 credits or four modules per year. In other words, students must obtain 48 credits in two semesters. Unisa qualifications are structured in such a way to help students pass the required number of credits within a given amount of time to graduate. 

Each student must not exceed the maximum number of modules required per semester so they get sufficient time to study in order to pass. The following are the maximum number of credits/modules each student can register per semester. 

Even when you think you can handle more modules than the prescribed number, the registration department will not allow you to register more than the required modules. 

What Is Considered a Pass at Unisa?

UNISA uses assignments, tests, and examinations as educational assessment tools designed to measure the students’ skills, knowledge, aptitude, and classification in different topics. Students are required to obtain an average mark of 50% for a pass. 

If you put time and effort into your study, 50% is an achievable pass mark. If you want to prove your academic excellence, you can aim for higher scores to get distinctions. However, a pass is sufficient to allow you to graduate when you finish your studies.   

How Many Credits Is a Teaching Degree at Unisa?

A teaching degree at Unisa is a comprehensive qualification that allows qualified teachers to teach grades 7 to 10. Teaching at this stage involves the integration of academic-related subjects and educational subjects for the preparation of educators to undergo Senior Phase Further Education and Training Teaching. The qualification is known as Bachelor of Education or B Ed.   

B Ed training aims to prep are the students for a multitude of careers and further study. It is designed to consolidate an integrated teaching approach by offering practical, disciplinary, situational, and pedagogical knowledge. It also helps the teachers gain a practical understanding of learning and teaching in diverse backgrounds of South African schools concerning practice and policy, subject specialization, and educational theory.

A teaching degree at Unisa is comprehensive, which makes it more demanding than other degrees. This qualification consists of 480 credits which are equivalent to 40 modules. Before you choose this program, make sure you have enough time and are capable of handling the pressure that comes with your studies.   

How Many Modules Should I Pass Per Semester at Unisa?

In your first year and first semester of study at Unisa, you are expected to pass one module of 12 credits. In your second semester, you must pass two modules with 12 credits each or a total of 24 credits. This will give you the 36 credits required for the first year to allow you to register for your second year.  

In your second year, you must obtain 48 credits, and you should get the same in subsequent years of study. 48 credits are equivalent to four modules, so you must aim to balance them between the two semesters. It is imperative to read Unisa’s readmission rules so that you pass all the required modules per semester. 

How Many Credits Do You Need to Pass a Year at Unisa?

In your first year at Unisa, you must pass a minimum of 36 credits or three modules with 12 credits each. You can also consider a maximum of five modules or 60 credits in your first year. However, you cannot exceed the maximum credits threshold you should undertake at this stage. 

In your second year and subsequent years of study, you need to pass 48 credits or four modules. The maximum number of credits you can get is 120 or 10 modules. Choose your modules wisely to ensure you pass your course. 

How Many Credits Is a BEd at Unisa?

Bachelor of Education (BEd) covers Senior Phase, Further Education, and Training Teaching. This is a comprehensive degree that is offered with various School Subject Combinations. Each combination is specifically designed to suit the needs of a particular teaching field and students.  

The School Subject Combination involves the study of different languages, including English, African Languages, Arabic, Afrikaans, French, Mandarin, and Portuguese, which help equip student teachers to gain knowledge to teach various languages in the FET phase. The total credits for BEd are 480. 

When you enrol at Unisa to pursue your preferred qualification, you must pass a certain number of credits to be able to proceed with your studies. Each semester and each academic year, all students should meet specific criteria concerning the passing mark for each program. However, the requirements vary according to qualification and level of study. Therefore, get all the details before registering for your modules during a particular semester.
