The National Senior Certificate (Amended), also called your ‘adult matric’, is a great option for learners who didn’t have the opportunity to achieve their matric through school or the National Senior Certificate (NSC). Functioning in exactly the same way as the NSC, you will have the chance to obtain better working opportunities, or even tertiary education, with your adult matric. Here’s what you should know.
What is An Amended National Senior Certificate?
The amended national senior certificate is called the ‘adult matric’. It is the matric-equivalent qualification that learners over the age of 21 can achieve. As it is identical to the NSC, except in name, you will be able to do anything you can with a normal matric with it.
Amended Senior Certificate Online Registration 2024
You can apply for the examination session for the amended senior certificate through the Department of Basic Education’s online portal easily. Remember, however, that this would only allow you to sit the final examination session, not provide you with tuition and learning support as you prepare for the examinations.
However, many community colleges, vocational schools, and other learning institutions offer full adult matric programs you can apply for-and many of these allow for online application, online study, and distance learning. You would need to choose your institution by your availability, course load, and other requirements and apply to them directly. Each offers different programs and degrees of support.
How Do I Pass My Amended National Senior Certificate?
If you arrived at the need to write adult matric by failure, rather than by lack of opportunity to take your Grade 12 examinations, you must address what went wrong. You may simply have been too young and unconcerned with your future, which adult learners can often remedy naturally by being more focused and responsible. Likewise, if you failed the NSC due to life circumstances, ensure you are now in a better place to learn and achieve.
However, you may have needed a different learning approach, support for learning disabilities, or other issues. Look for a place that will help you with these matters. Past this, you can pass your amended national senior certificate the same way as any other exam. Be consistent in working through the material in the year(s) before the exam, plan your studies carefully, work hard, use self-care and get enough sleep, practice past papers, ask for help as needed, and take the opportunity seriously so you can meet your educational goals.
Who Qualifies For An Amended National Senior Certificate?
Most people will qualify for the amended national senior certificate provided they will be over 21 when they take the exam- so you can start as early as 19. You will typically need your Grade 9 certificate or an equivalent NQF1 certificate. As this has been the earliest possible school-leaving age in South Africa since 1996, you should qualify by default. Older learners who left school earlier than this should ask their institution of choice for guidelines.
What is the Difference Between Amended and Senior Certificate?
Functionally, there is no difference between the amended and senior certificates. They are both NAF 4 qualifications, they are both valid matrics, and you can use your amended senior certificate in the exact same ways as an NSC.
Where they differ is in what age and circumstances you take them, and the amended senior certificate examination will count for 100% of your final mark. The NSC consists of 75% examination marks and 25% coursework through the last year of school.
Can I Go to University With An Amended Senior Certificate?
If you pass your amended senior certificate with university exemption, you can go to university with it. Remember, it acts exactly the same as an NSC matric certificate. Be sure to check with the university and program you want to study for exact entry requirements.
How Many Subjects Do You Need to Pass An Amended Senior Certificate?
To pass an amended senior certificate, you will select 6 subjects. You must:
- Pass your official home language (Afrikaans or English) and at least two others at 40%
- You must pass two others with at least 30%
- The last subject must pass at 20%
Remember that these are the lowest pass requirements to obtain your adult matric at all. If you are hoping to study further (either a certificate, diploma, or university qualification), you must make sure you pass the minimum benchmarks for these. Some degree programs are more demanding than others, so you will need to also consider any tertiary learning or skills upgrades you hope to achieve and plan your subjects accordingly.
Getting your adult matric, or amended national senior certificate, is a great way to improve on a failed or never-completed matric, upgrade your work and study opportunities, and show yourself as a dedicated and ambitious adult student.
